I love technology, especially when it comes to saving money. Light bulbs have advanced from the early invention of the incandescent bulb developed by Thomas Edison, but actually invented by an Englishman named Humphry Davy back in 1809. As you can see the common light bulb has been around a long time.
Just recently developments have been made in our fluorescent light bulbs that are quite common in businesses and schools for years. From that technology has come the CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulb which will screw into a regular light socket. These new bulbs can save you up to 33% over the cost of a regular incandescent bulb.
But, there are some pros and cons to these bulbs. CFL bulbs contain mercury the same as their earlier counterparts. Heavy metal poisoning is a reality from these bulbs. These bulbs must be handled with care, and if broken, care must be taken for cleaning up the fine particles. Another con is the fact that they are slow to start, especially if used in cold environments.
I am excited to now write about the new LED (light emitting diode) bulb. I am doing an experiment currently in my kitchen which I have 6 recessed can lights with 65 watt incandescent flood bulbs in each. This is a total of 390 watts. I just replaced them with 11 watt LED light bulbs that are equal to the 65 watt incandescent bulb. Now we have only 66 watts of power! The LED bulb is a bright white light that fills our kitchen with soft atmosphere.
What is so amazing about these bulbs is how long they will last. A standard light bulb will last 2000 hours, but an LED light bulb will last at least 30,000 hours or 15 times longer than a standard bulb. Another great thing about these new bulbs is that unlike other higher wattage bulbs they emit very little heat. I do not know about you but that is absolutely amazing. Currently these bulbs are quite expensive but with supply and demand the price will come down.
I consider the LED light technology to be the most energy-efficient light bulb of the century. Inventions like these come from digital electronics and space age technology. If you want to save money on your electrical cost and help the environment, then may I suggest the new LED energy-efficient bulb? Have you considered LED?
